Japan’s Tax-Free Shopping System Is Changing to a Refund Method

2026/10/08

Starting with purchases made on or after November 1, 2026, Japan’s consumption tax exemption system will switch to a “refund method.”

Under the new system, shoppers will pay the full price, including consumption tax, at the time of purchase. If customs officials at an airport or port confirm that the purchased goods are being taken out of Japan, the equivalent amount of consumption tax will then be refunded.
